Over the course of the trimester, there were many changes in my overall Genius Project.
For starters, going into the year I had planned to create a notification system for the City of Carlsbad. I had seen an example of it when I visited my family in New York. I envisioned it to allow the residents of Carlsbad to get immediate information on road closures, fires, natural disasters, and community-wide events. While most cities have websites in a society today people are not taking the time to visit the URL and search for local events, newspapers are outdated and texting/instant messages are the future of our society's way of getting information. This is evident through 'presidential alerts', where citizens of the country receive immediate notifications and urgent messages for safety and security. And while this idea was interesting, I did not truly care. I was not passionate about 'notifications'. It had become my project through the lack of success in my original Genius Project: Revamping Sexual Education Curriculum. The idea to revamp the sexual education curriculum came from my experiences of the consequences of poor education. In the ways our current students treated each other, and in the lack of professionalism from teachers teaching it. Here at Sage, sex-ed is taught in P.E. and we learned absolutely nothing. For most students they learn more about sex ed from 10 minutes Instagram, SnapChat, and music than the week long unit to inform students. Instead of an education to better prepare our students for the 'real world' it was aimed to scare them. The main message was "abstinence is key", but while we would like to think that it is that easy. I just isn't. My original idea for the genius project was to survey/poll the population of Sage Creek to see what they felt the curriculum lack and how it could be bettered to more accurately represent them as people. The current, or at least when I took sex-ed did not discuss gender identity and sexual orientation. My idea entailed creating a presentation to present to the administration to promote the integration of a more cohesive inclusive sexual curriculum.
